Code of Conduct
In-Person Organization
The open exchange of ideas, the freedom of thought and expression, and respectful scientific debate are central to the goals of the MenaML Winter School. This requires a community that recognizes and respects the basic dignity of every person.
All participants at our summer school—attendees, organizers, speakers, teaching assistants, sponsors, and volunteers—are required to agree with this code of conduct both during the event and on official communication channels, including social media. Organizers will enforce this code, and we expect cooperation from all participants to help ensure a safe and productive environment for everybody.
Prohibited Behaviors
Discrimination, bullying, or harassment based on gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), politics, technology choices, or any other personal characteristic.
Offensive or demeaning comments, diminutive characterizations, behaviors that interfere with another’s participation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, intimidation, inappropriate physical contact, unwelcome sexual attention, or public vulgar exchanges.
Harassment of any kind, including but not limited to sexual harassment, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, inappropriate physical contact, unwelcome sexual attention, public vulgar exchanges, and diminutive characterizations.
Expectations for Sponsors
Sponsors must also abide by this Code of Conduct. Images, activities, and promotional materials must not be sexual, racially offensive, or otherwise discriminatory. Sponsor staff (including volunteers) may not use sexualized clothing/uniforms/costumes or create a sexualized environment. This policy extends to organizations using the winter school name in their branding for activities at or around the event.
Enforcement and Reporting
The organizers are dedicated to maintaining a safe, productive environment for all. We expect full cooperation from participants in upholding this commitment.
If you experience or witness any behavior violating this Code of Conduct, please report it immediately at escalation@mena.ml or speaking directly to an organizer.
We will investigate all reports promptly and confidentially. Violations of the Code of Conduct may result in:
A warning;
Expulsion from the school (without refund);
Reporting the incident to relevant authorities.
Individuals found in violation will also be barred from future participation in the school.
Retaliation against anyone reporting a violation of this Code of Conduct will not be tolerated. The organizers can take action against an offender even if no formal complaint has been made.
Remember: Even well-intentioned actions can cause harm. If someone raises a concern about your behavior, stop the behavior immediately and consider consulting an organizer.
